Halloween

We had a great Halloween this year.  This first picture was from the corn maze, Everly really loved riding the barrel train with Zac because he makes everything so fun.  She dressed up as a lady bug for ward trunk or treat and then Grandma Packer brought us the adorable lamb costume that aunt Julie sewed for Kate about 10 years ago.  It is literally the cutest little costume ever.  She will probably be a lamb next year too!

The Daniels Family came over for dinner and trunk or treat the Saturday before Halloween to celebrate Shelly's birthday.  It was so fun!  The kids all looked so cute in their costumes!  Teagan was the grimm reaper, Eloise was a witch, Adeline was Elsa, Everly was a lady bug, Taylin was a clown girl, Zoey was Harley Quinn, Quinn was super girl and Grayson was Batman.  Such a cute bunch of kids!

On Halloween we made our traditional trip to great grandma Packer's (and grandma packer) house.  She made chili that was delicious and they loaded the kids up with candy.  My mom bought some dry ice that was really cool and the kids loved it!

After our family vacation to San Diego we were all sugared out!  It was time for a break so we made a deal with the kids. If they could go until Halloween without eating any sugar, they would get to invite a friend to go to the famous Gravity Factory in Rexburg.  We were so impressed with all of them!  They each had super hard times, but they were strong and said no.  Teagan went to a birthday party and chose to eat a banana instead of cake, ice-cream and a bowl full of candy bars.  Eloise skipped out on cupcakes at school for a birthday and didn't even lick off the ring on top, she rinsed it in the sink.  She had a play date with Kya Phelps and they were making homemade cookies, she said no thank you.  All of them said no to treats at church during class and donuts at the primary program practice and cookies after the program.  That doesn't even include all the times they were offered candy at banks, stores, or from grandparents.  So many people told me that they were inspired by our three kiddos to be healthier and cut back on sweets.  There were a few slip ups so Teagan and Adeline didn't get to bring friends.  Teagan had candy during church on fast sunday and had some treats that people shared at lunch a couple times, but he confessed and we decided to show mercy because he had done so much good.  Adeline couldn't handle it at grandma and grandpa durtschi's house one night when they had cake and ice-cream, she decided to go all in and had 2 ½ pieces of cake and 2 servings of ice cream before we could stop her.  haha  So no friends for them.  It ended up being such a fun time!  Eloise brought Kya Phelps and all of us had so much fun.  We were all sore for a few days after, which was so awesome!  On the way out they all started asking when we were doing the next challenge so that we could go back.  Totally worth $140 right?  Maybe...I will admit we didn't check out the pricing before we made the deal.  We ended up buying a punch pass to save a little money so we have enough to go back 2 more times with just our family.  So I guess it was worth it.

Cousin Fun

We were able to babysit Quinn and Grayson and it was so much fun to have them over!  Addy and Quinn are starting to play more and Grayson and Everly were interacting so cute!  Chasing each other around and giggling .  Adeline loved being the oldest for once and was very kind and helped everyone on and off the trampoline.  They all jumped and fell down and laughed on the trampoline for probably 30 minutes.  We are so lucky to live close to family!

Seeing Through New Eyes

I have been wanting to write about my eyes and I'm finally sitting down to do it.  I have had a lazy eye, strabismus to be exact, since I was born.  Basically, my eyes don't work together.  After several surgeries when I was very young and patching and glasses, they finally dubbed me "better" when I was in fourth grade.  I never have really felt completely better because my right eye still wanders.

At first it would only wander very rarely, especially when I was tired, but in the last few years it has become more present.

It is always easy for me to tell when it is wandering because when I talk to people, they look behind themselves to see what I'm looking at.  I try to not care, but if I'm being honest, it's pretty embarrassing.  I try to force my eye to look at them, but I can't.  I usually just end up not looking at them at all so that they don't get confused.

If it was just cosmetic, maybe I wouldn't care, but it has started affecting my vision.  I don't feel safe driving at night because my depth perception is very poor.   I just feel like overall, I'm not seeing as well.

A few years ago I went to an eye doctor, hoping for answers, and he basically told me that there was nothing that could be done, so I accepted that and just kind of stopped worrying about it and had other people drive me when it was dark.

Then a few months ago I decided that I would try seeing an ophthalmologist and get another opinion. I found out that it would be $300 just for the visit so I settled on seeing a new optometrist.  I had my appointment in August and Dr. Kohler was so great.  He told me that an ophthalmologist would likely want to do surgery to correct the problem, but that I should try patching first.  He suggested that I patch my good eye for 4-5 hours every day to strengthen my bad eye.

I left the office and ordered some patches and was very motivated to avoid surgery and get better.  He gave me the hope that my eyes could get better and I was excited...that was until I patched for the first time, and the second, and the third.  It is awful!

I soon figured out that I can barely see out of my right eye.  While wearing the patch everything is really blurry and dull in color.  I can read, but it takes me about 5 times as long to decipher and decode (literally).  I would try to harvest the garden, but I couldn't see the colors well enough to know what was ripe.  I run into people, walls, babies, you name it, because my eye just isn't taking everything in.  There are definitely moments when I rip off the patch and throw little adult tantrums (usually in the form of eating chocolate) because I'm so frustrated.  Like when I'm prepping food and cut myself or when I'm trying to pull Eloise's hair into a ponytail and miss a huge chunk of hair or when I send texts that nobody can understand because of the combination of me misspelling and siri autocorrecting or when I step on a child or when I don't notice Everly destroying something.

After about 6 weeks of patching, I hadn't really seen any results.  Everything was still blurry and dull and I just was getting tired of patching for nothing.  I called the doctor and asked "are you sure you can't give me glasses so that everything won't be blurry???"  He was kind and said, just keep doing what you're doing, glasses won't help.

And then the general conference for my church came.  On the Saturday night session I went to the women's session alone and just soaked it all in.  Every talk felt like exactly what I needed to hear.  It felt like fears and worries were disappearing the spirit was so strong.  In the final talk our prophet, Russell M Nelson issued a challenge to all the women of the church.  The first was to take a 10 day fast from social media, which I definitely needed.

Then he issued a challenge for us to read the Book of Mormon from cover to cover, highlighting any verse that mentioned Jesus Christ.  I was scribbling down everything as fast as I could, feeling excited.  The last time a prophet challenged us to do this was when I was engaged to Zac and I didn't do it.  Ever since, I've been excited for another chance.

Here are his words:
"Second, I invite you to read the Book of Mormon between now and the end of the year. As impossible as that may seem with all you are trying to manage in your life, if you will accept this invitation with full purpose of heart, the Lord will help you find a way to achieve it. And, as you prayerfully study, I promise that the heavens will open for you. The Lord will bless you with increased inspiration and revelation.
As you read, I would encourage you to mark each verse that speaks of or refers to the Savior. Then, be intentional about talking of Christ, rejoicing in Christ, and preaching of Christ with your families and friends.2 You and they will be drawn closer to the Savior through this process. And changes, even miracles, will begin to happen."
As he said that last line, "changes, even miracles, will begin to happen" I felt a very overwhelming spiritual feeling.  The very distinct impression came to my mind, "if you will do this, you will see a miracle; your eye will be healed."  It was so powerful I just started to well up and shake.  The idea of having my eye be healed seemed too good to be true.  I kept thinking about it and realized that I would be reading with the patch on.  This made me cry more because I knew that it was going to be very difficult, but how could I not do it after that experience?
That was two weeks ago, yesterday.  Since that time I have already seen miracles taking place.  Every morning I get up at 5:30 to give myself time to read before the kids wake up.  I usually don't have time to read the 6 pages all at once so I finish during Everly's nap or later at night.  I shared the experience with Zac and the kids and they have all been so supportive.  Eloise came over once and told me, "I know it's hard mom, but don't take off the patch!  You can do it!"  Zac is always trying to help give me a few extra minutes by taking the kids downstairs so I can concentrate longer.  Other family members encourage me and help me remember to keep on working.
So far, I can't say that I'm getting a lot out of what I'm reading, I'm hoping that will come!  It's pretty much all I can do to figure out what the words are and recognize when it's talking about Christ.   Luckily, this isn't the first time I've read it so I can draw on past memories of comprehension.
The first miracle happened a few nights after I started when I was tweezing my eyebrows.  All of the sudden there were two sets of tweezers!  I was seeing double, just for an instant.  Dr Kohler told me that seeing double was often a sign that things were starting to work.  I was ecstatic and knew that things were going in the right direction.  It has happened a few more times since then.
The second miracle occurred in the temple.  I was at a session about a week ago with the relief society and I had meant to bring and wear my patch because I had only worn it for about 2 hours that day.  I forgot it, so I just decided to cover my eye with my hand.  I must have been putting pressure on my eye because after I removed my hand,  my good eye couldn't see.  Everything was super super blurry, much worse then my "bad" eye.  I definitely had a silent panic attack that I had ruined my good eye forever and would become blind.  I had the thought come that I should force my "bad" eye to see and take over.  I felt like Harry Potter trying to focus on a complicated spell or Matilda trying to use her powers.  I stared at the temple worker at the front of the room and willed my bad eye to take over.  In a quick instant it did and things became more clear.  I did a silent jump for joy in my chair and tried again and again.  I started being able to hold my gaze with my bad eye and learned what it felt like for it to take over.
After a few minutes, my good eye could see perfectly fine again and so I couldn't switch.  I just pushed on it again to make it blurry so I could keep practicing.  By the end of the session I was able to switch back and forth from eye to eye, even when my good eye wasn't blurry.  My head was throbbing and everything got blurry and my eyes were screaming at me to stop.  It was like doing p90x after not working out for a few months, my muscles were exhausted.  I was on cloud 9 though.  I came home and jumped on the bed and said, "Zac, watch this, what are my eyes doing!"  and I showed him how I could switch.  I don't think other people can comprehend what a huge deal this is.  My right eye is just usually there, doing nothing, while the left eye does all the work,  the doctor said it only is accounting for about 20% of what I see.  Being able to control it is an amazingly huge step for me.  It was so exciting and I couldn't fall asleep forever that night.

Here are some super unflattering pictures of me that show me putting each eye in charge.  My right eye is the struggling one and my left is the dictator in general.  I figure it will be good to take pictures along the way so I can measure differences and improvements.

I called my doctor and he was so excited for me and very surprised that I was suddenly seeing these results.  He definitely wants me to keep doing whatever I'm doing.  I feel like there are two parts, physically my eyes are being strengthened with the reading, it's like an intense workout everyday, of course that will strengthen my eye.  But I know that my obedience to follow the prophet will multiply any results that would have been brought by just reading any old book for an hour every morning.
I know that this isn't the end of the miracles that will happen for me if I keep working hard.  I feel so blessed to be able to have this experience.  If I hadn't been born with this eye dysfunction, I would have never been able to have these incredible experiences and feel so close to my Father in Heaven.  I guess I am seeing, first hand, why we need to have trials in our lives.  They really are blessing...eventually.

Harvest Bounty

This year was a pretty magical year in the garden.  Gallons and gallons of raspberries, constant strawberries for June, August and September, and peach trees that produced 100s of peaches made for a fun summer!  The vegetables did really well too.  Maybe we are starting to figure out the whole gardening thing!  I still love gardening and it brings me so much joy.  I love the time I get to spend outside, I love working with my kids and getting them excited about the bounty God provides for us.  I love filling up my jars and shelves with food that we will be able to eat all winter.  I love sharing delicious food with friends and neighbors.  I really don't know what's not to love about gardening....maybe that one snake or the slugs in my lettuce, but everything else is the best!

San Diego Family Vacation

We had so much fun on our family trip to San Diego.  There were of course ups and downs, but I loved it!  We stopped in St. George for the first few nights and loved the resort there.  We could have stayed for a whole week and not been able to enjoy all that there was to do at the resort and at Zion's National Park.  We spent Saturday at Zion's and it was amazing.  I had never been and it was seriously so amazing.  The pictures can hardly do it justice.  We decided to do a hike called Angel's Landing.  It is pretty famous because the last quarter mile (optional) is a pretty skinny path with a drop off cliff on both sides.  there is a chain to hold on to, but it sounded terrifying and I was definitely not doing it or letting any of my kids do it when we started.  By the time we got to the top something had changed.  Maybe the elevation had gotten to me or maybe the beauty of everything was blinding me to the danger, but I decided that I wanted to do it and to bring Teagan and Eloise along.  Even as I write this I just feel sick to my stomach, what was I thinking?!?  We did it, it was awesome, there were no close calls and I was the only one who slipped a little (nothing too scary).  Every person that we passed praised Teagan and Eloise for being so brave (except the ones that silently judged us for putting our children's lives in danger haha)  We watched grown men and women turn back, Eloise and Teagan never seem to be nervous at all.  We made it to the top and it was so incredible.  The way down I was in the back instead of the front and it all the sudden got a little scarier watching my precious children walking that close to the edge of a cliff.  I was glad when it was over, but honestly, during the hike I never felt very nervous.  Then I got home and looked at pictures and videos and started wondering what I was thinking.  I'm glad we did it.

We drove to San Diego on Sunday and went to the Mormon Battalion, it was so interesting to learn about those pioneers and all that they faced.  It was the perfect Sunday activity!

Monday we went to Lego Land and everyone loved it.  There were hardly any people there so we rarely had to wait more then 5 minutes for a ride.  The kids went on this roller coaster at least 10 times, maybe more.  Logan and Everly were buddies in the stroller, he loved riding with her and was so sweet with her!  Addy and Ellie loved all the lego structures, especially the Lego Friends ones, they are lego lovers for sure.  Everly was adorable on the carousel.  She laughed and laughed and did her hilarious quick inhale throat growl thing that she does when she is excited.

Tuesday was a tennis, beach and pool day.  We met my good friend Erin at the beach and the kids boogie boarded and played in the sand for hours.  I don't think I saw Teagan for more then about 10 minutes all day because he was in the water the whole time.  It was so great to catch up with Erin and see her cute little kids.  The house we stayed at had a pool so the kids loved to play in it while the adults recovered from being on vacation for a few hours.

Disneyland
Wednesday was Disneyland.  We had fast passes and it wasn't too crowded so we got to ride a ton of rides compared to what it is normally like.  It was just going to be us at Disneyland but Jeff and Julie surprised us and came last minute.  I had sent Julie my location through our phones the day before and it was still on so they actually tracked us down and surprised us as we were waiting at Star Tours.  The kids were excited, especially Teagan.  I think Eloise was a little sad that she was going to have to share her big brother.    The kids thought Disneyland was really fun but I realized that we need to watch all the old Disney movies before we go next time because a lot of it didn't make much sense to them.   It was really fun to be there at Halloween time.  Everything was decorated and we even got to see Jack Skeleton in person!  We had a great day, but there were SO many people there and I think the kids liked LEGO Land better which was way more affordable.  I'm glad we went so that our kids can check it off the bucket list though, we definitely made some memories.

Thursday we recovered some more and then went on a harbor cruise tour of downtown San Diego.  It was so cool to see the city from that side and learn some of the history.  We got to go under the coronado bridge which was cool for me.  The kids ran all over like crazy people the whole time, they started getting a little rambunctious with each other by the end of the week.  We went to eat Mexican food down by the Padres' stadium and had to separate into families to try to get a little peace.  On the way home we stopped at Peterson's Donuts in Escondido (the best ever!) and let each kid pick out a donut.  Those donuts were one of the highlights of the trip, so yummy!

Friday morning the Lewis family headed home and we decided to stay for one more night.  My friend Erin Packard, had invited us to sleep there so we took her up on the offer and it was so worth it!  We went and visited Zac's old PT school, St Augustine, in San Marcos.  The kids tolerated the tour and Zac loved taking a walk down memory lane and seeing everything new.  It was so crazy to think how much our lives had changed in 8 short years.  Life really does pass by too quickly!  After that we headed to Torrey Pines Reserve.  It is basically a big cliff that overlooks the beach and there are tons of trails to take to see the view.  We did a 1 mile loop and it was perfect.  It was crazy because all the trails were sand.  So foreign to us Idaho folks.  The view was gorgeous so we did a quick photo shoot.  I love nature and it was fun to get to see hiking that was so different then what we are used to.

Then we headed to the Packard home and hung out for a while.  We decided to go eat at a fun local BBQ joint for dinner that was super yummy.  Our kids were shy for about 5 minutes and then they loved each other and had so much fun together.  After dinner we headed back, put the kids to bed and chatted the night away.   We caught up and laughed so hard and just enjoyed seeing each other again. Hopefully, it won't be 8 years before we get the chance to see them again!

We got up early Saturday morning, ate delicious waffles and then headed out for the drive home.  We decided to just go all the way home in one day.  It was a very long day and we were all sick of the car by the end, but we made it alive.  It was such a wonderful week to spend as a family.  After discussing things afterwards we decided that in the future we will just do family vacations with our family.  The kids all loved being together so much that they couldn't handle 5 minutes without each other and drove the parents insane asking when we'd see them again.  haha  We've decided that we can visit each other at our homes and then the adults can take vacations together (we didn't get near enough time playing tennis!).  We still had fun and it was still a great trip though.  I definitely think we will be heading back to San Diego again!
